ok trying not to be stupid but what are the numbers people put next to thier list of pets at the end of posts??

also im considering getting a couple of fire belly newts from work (fish wholesaler and occasionally other aquatic species) i already have a small terrarium habitat im not sure how many newts to get though as i really want to breed them. not sure how to tell the sex of them they are only 1-2 inches at the moment.

hopefully i should be getting them this friday if someone will lend me the cash, only £1.25 plus vat each i'll probably steal a pack of frozen bloodworm as well. what else shall i feed them on? i need to get them soon because the idiot that was in yesterday didnt check that the pump was working properly (a lot of them are shedding so it got clogged up) and i got to work this morning to find about 200 dead and only 50 left so i want to get them somewhere safe fast. i am cleaning out the habitat for them tonight then i'll let the water settle for a few days. does phib water need to cycle like fish tank water should i just use a bit of water out of my fish tank to get it going?

I think at their age it would be that some are better at getting food rather than a difference between sexes. With amphibians you usually can't tell the difference until they are adults and even then it needs to be breeding season.

I would buy 3 I think - get a fat one and a skinny one just in case

we have hundreds at the moment but they usually sell pretty fast. are the sexes in each lot born usually 50:50 or is there more chance of getting either male or female?

a few of the ones we have are quite fat and squidgy and the others are not skinny but quite slimlined. would this be a way of telling the difference or could it be that they are a bit greedier than the rest lol

thankyou so much for your help if you ever need to buy supplies for your pets at wholesaler prices let me know

Welcome to the forum

The numbers usually tell you how many of each sex they have of that animal. It usually goes: male, female, unknown so if someone wrote Horned frogs 3.6.2 that would mean they had 3 males, 6 females and 2 unsexed

If you want to ensure that you get a breeding pair then buying 3-4 is advised, but that depends on how big your tank is. It's not worth over-crowding them just to increase your chances of a pair
