Glad you said that Punkman- because I want the fires, Lewy wants the Tigers. I win!

at present they are overwintering in an unheated room in a 3ft tank with a substrate of composted bark chippings, moss, wood, a hide and a water bowl.
I also have other subspecies in a more clinical set up of damp kitchen paper with hide.check out here for a good care sheet which mentions this method
http://www.caudata.org/cc/species/Salamandra/Salamandra_sp.shtml

Ive found this method excellent as any uneaten food or waste can be seen on the daily observations and the paper substrate removed.

Id go with fires rather than tigers if I were you as when keeping tigers in the past i found that for them to be properly happy in captivity they needed a set up to mimic their wild habitat where they spend almost all of there time below ground.
I gave them a sustrate of arounbd 8 inches of firmed down soil in which they would dig tunnels and would not be sdeen untill the once a month sustrate changes when i would have to dig them out lol

Me and Kaz are after a couple of these, well it's either fire salamanders or tiger salamanders... we haven't decided yet. What kind of setup do you have them in?
