can you use moss from your back garden to put in a salamander tank

I wouldn't. There could be all kinds of bugs and parasites on it that could cause problems to a captive bred Sal.

Go to your local garden centre and ask there for some moss, you can normally buy a nice big bag of moss for a few quid, and it's cultivated indoors, so there's less chance of causing harm to the Sal.
