I was wondering if you could just make sure the equipment I'm considering picking up is ok for a White's frog n00b like myself: If I'm missing anything, or you think something would be better, please let me know.
Terrarium: Exo Terra Rainforest Habitat Kit Small 30x30x45cm (will this be big enough for one frog?)
Heating: Habistat Heat Mat 150mm x 280mm, 6" x 11" (7 watts)- To apply to the upper side of the tank on the outside (I'll insulate it with styro)
Light: Exo Terra Sun Glo Neodymium Daylight Lamp 25 Watt (T10)- Since it's a Exo terrarium I thought I'd better with this.
Does anyone know if the hood has two fittings? I'd like to install the night glo too if possible.
Pretty basic, but I'm sure you experts will be able to advise. It's much appreciated! |

Posted - 02/06/2010 : 15:26:32 No probs. I'd give you the full list of what went into my terrarium, but some would say I overkilled it a bit. ;) It's certainly not basic, but if you love setting up environments for your pets well worth the time and money to go naturalistic. :)

Posted - 31/05/2010 : 14:47:38 Why do you want a night bulb? If it's just to observe your frogs at night then I would suggest a simple LED light in red or blue for this, these will easily attach. Personally though I just use ambient light to view at night.
Passing on a tip I got on here, get yourself a second heat mat and place this under the bottom. This really helps to keep humidity at around the 50% mark, without I found my terrarium got dry very very fast, requiring misting multiple times during a day. If you put it in a similar area to your side mounted one you will still have the nice heat gradient across the terrarium, allowing your frogs to thermo regulate properly.
Oh and re moss, in a White's enclosure moss doesn't fair all that well as the humidity isn't kept as high as for rainforest species, so it tends to only do well by the water area, which if you are using a bowl you wont really have. What I did before I had a water area was to put some in a second bowl and keep it just about wet, my frogs liked to sit in this moss bowl. Once my frogs got large enough I installed a small water area, and now have a lot more moss, bot in the water and on the shore in the form of some nice carpet moss, as I changed it to a naturalistic set up. ;)

Posted - 30/05/2010 : 21:24:15 Jolly good! I was looking at the 'how to plant' thread (which you've also replied in). I was thinking a good bit of climbing bark, some moss and perhaps a small prayer plant. Will be plotting at length (I'm one of THOSE people).
Considered building my own out of acrylic but I wasn't sure on how I'd get the lighting sorted without a proper hood. It doesn't seem to be much cheaper, and I think those exo terra's are pretty good from what I've read.
I'll check out the mother forum too (like you suggested in my other thread)
Cheers
EDIT: Just seen that there's only one socket in the hood, so I guess a night bulb could just be pointed into the tank from the side? |

Posted - 30/05/2010 : 20:55:37 Equipment sounds good, now all you need is a froggy, substrate and some nice strong growing plants. The viv sounds good for one frog, possibly more depending on how packed out it is. Not sure on the hood myself as I never used one with mine, but if not then it shouldn't be to hard to fit a secondary light. |
