I've recently joined the forum in the hope that I can get some info on a problem I've been having...
I'm looking to buy either one or a pair of Red Eyed Tree Frogs but I can't seem to find them anywhere. I've been to the 3 major pet stores in town (all of which do plenty of other tree frog species) and I've been searching online for a breeder with no luck.
I did speak with the manager of one of the pet store - who was also interested in getting some - and both he and I wondered whether the limited supply was due to chytridiomycosis - the disease that's been causing a lot of 'phib deaths globally - either through population losses or trade reductions. I really hope not and that it's just a lull in breeding... :/
Anyway, if anyone knows of any stores/breeders in the South West preferably (though I am willing to travel a little way to get one), then please let me know! :D
Hi Shadowwake - Most pet shops can order phibs in from their suppliers, It all depends as well on the time of year. I know pollywog had bred some last year if I remember right and they were for sale on his website. exoticpets.co.uk have them in stock - but they stress very easily so really I'd recommend picking them up yourself if you live close enough. There were a few at Doncaster show but they sold very quickly. They may have some at the next doncaster show in september but I can't guarantee that if they have any going at a resonable price I won't beat you to it
Not sure on the effect of chytrid Fungus with these guys, Captive bred animals can however be treated. Wild caught usually have problems from stress and can have parasites anyway so are probably best avoided in my opinion.
I think Red Eyes are really sensitive to stress, so I think a lot of shops don't stock them because shipping them in and selling them on causes that much stress that quite a few die and then they have the hassle of either lost stock or customer complaints.
Not sure if they are any harder to breed than other tree frogs, but that could also be true.
