Hi....very new to this and need help!!! We are setting up a new vivarium for frogs....hopefully Whites and Green tree frogs...Have set up with substrate, water bowl, live plants, UV light, heat mat that covers half tank floor, bamboo for climbing. Tank size is 2ft x 1ft x 15". It has been running for approx 18hours, without frogs, and the temp shows it is struggling to maintain 70F. The whole interior is now dripping with condensation. I know that the tank needs to settle but is this to be expected? Cannot see anything other than the condensation!!!! Look forward to advice. Boobydo92 |

Put your heat mat on the side of the vivarium. This will help to keep temps up, and should also reduce the quantity of condensation you are getting. With it on the bottom the substrate is acting as an insulator, plus the moisture in the substrate is been evaporated by the mat, raising the humidity.
When you say tank size, do you mean to say you are using a glass aquarium as a vivarium? If so, make sure you have a screen mesh lid not a glass or plastic one, as these will keep humidity in and reduce air flow. Glass is good for dart frogs (where high humidity and condensation are a plus). Condensation really does sound like you have low air movement in there, if you already have a screen top try adding a small fan to move the air more.
Oh and that tank wont be big enough for White's and Green tree frogs (which aren't ideal tank mates anyway). White's can easily reach 4 inches, and are very boisterous nocturnal frogs.
Final question, what substrate do you have in there? Some are good for raising humidity, such as sphagnum. I use eco-soil in my White's viv, with baked oak leaves on top so the frogs don't get as dirty.
Oh, and unless it's giant bamboo, it will be ok for young White's but a bit narrow for adult White's to climb on. ;)
Hope this helps.

Good luck bud. :) If you can't sort it, you could always fly proof your viv, get some fruitfly and springtail colonies going and switch to poison dart frogs. lol
