I have just set my tank up and have two Spanish Ribbed Newts. I have frozen blood worms for food. Can any one recommend other foods? Also i have set up a filter but some interner sites state that you do not need filters as the water should be calm. Any advise??
I give my Alpines Daphnia and live bloodworm as well. Sometimes they'll have the odd crick, which I cool for a little bit first then remove all but it's 2 front legs and put in the tank on the above water section.
Not totally sure about ribbed newts, but my alpines have seemed a bit happier since I stuck a filter in there, although I do have the head directed upwards so that the water doesn't have the full blast of the powerhead.
live foods are always better if you can get them. If the ribbed newts are still small, then live bloodworm, and small chopped earthworm are good foods, but as they get larger, the live bloodworm will be too small. check out this care sheet http://www.caudata.org/cc/species/Pleurodeles/P_waltl.shtml
Ive found ribbed newts to be fine with filters, but as kehhlyr does, If using a power filter [eg a fluval], I lay filter on the bottom with the water being pushed upwards.
