Well, some of you may have noticed that Dartfrog have been selling baby gray treefrogs for £2.99 (£2.50 each if you buy 4 or more) each recently. Well, my wife is a tree frog NUT. lol Last time I went to Dartfrog I took pics of these baby frogs, when my wife saw the pics, well....
So, ended up giving her some space on my new frog rack, and we bought a 45x45x60cm high Exo Terra, decor etc. No heating as these are a temperate species. Substrate is Hydrodrain drainage layer, weed fabric separator and Levington 100% organic top soil with a bit of EcoEarch mixed in. The plants, well she swiped most of them from ones I bought intending to use them in dart vivs... lol So 2 Neoregelia schultesiana 'Fireball' and a cryptanthus, added to these 2 clumps of mind your own business/baby tears bought specially for this one. Throw in some cork bark, and a small corkscrew liana and you get this:-
Pretty nice in my humble opinion. Basic, but looks good. Oh and I used 2 peat plates to keep the soil from sliding too far forward. The back is just the normal exo background, glued in with Gorilla glue. Sides I used Gorilla glue, sprayed it with water to get it to foam up, and covered with EcoEarth.
The frogs, well I chatted with Marc, told him the size of the viv, and he convinced me that 6 would be good, even at adult size. At the moment though, they are about the size of the nail on my little finger, and been fed on springtails and heidei fruit flies. As they grow a bit I will introduce them to bean weevils as well.
Anyway, frog pics:-
Now I have been hand misting this viv, with RO water reconsituted with BSP drops and Zocal-D, and had noticed that the frogs seemed to become quite unhappy between mistings, hiding out of the light. So I hooked this viv up to my misting system, using a ball valve to turn their nozzle of for 1 of the 2 mistings a day. The difference is noticeable, the frogs are much more active now, with 1 deciding to do some acrobatics:-
Although these are nocturnal, like most tree frogs, been babies they tend to be up a bit during the day as well, getting themselves a snack before going back to sleep.

Yup, to about 2 inches.
They're cheap because they are so young, so have a higher risk of mortality than adults. We already lost one, and 2/3 are missing, so my wife got me to grab 4 more whilst I was there today. Marc was really cool, got 4 for £5.

Yeah, accept we are back down to 3 again. Some of them fell and injured themselves, others turned out to have intestinal parasites (saw one pass a worm and die a few hours later). I Panacured the ones left, then another decided that dropping off the screen top would be fun, broke both it's hips....
Lesson learned, don't put baby frogs in a lovely big viv, and always Panacure frogs bought from Dartfrog. I do wish he would stop feeding micro crix, they're a nuisance for giving frogs intestinal parasites.
