My guide to starting a dubia roach colony the cheap and easy way.
*Take one large plastic Sweetie tub of celebrations. *Eat the chocolates. *Cut a square window in the middle of the lid and cover with a fine mesh. *Fill tub with egg boxes (couple of days worth of omelettes should help). *Go to www.roachcolony.com and order yourself 20 females, and 5 males (or more if you want a larger return). *Put tub either somewhere hot or on a heat mat aim for a temperature of around 30oC but a few degrees each way wont hurt. *Roaches arrive, put them in your tub. *Feed them a varied diet.
Babies should follow in no time.
I find this diet works really well.
Carrot Moistened Dog Biscuit ORANGES (Roach viagra) Bug Grub Crushed Breakfast Cereals (any will do)
I also feed my roaches the leftover Repashy Crested gecko Food.
It takes about 6 months for things to get going and you can begin harvesting your roaches, I have found with the female to male ratio of 20 to 5 you get a good amount of babies but not so many that you become overrun. I feed 3 tarantulas, a scorpion, a frog and a gecko and still have enough to grow to adults to replace my current adults when they die.
Oh and a small tip, when dusting roaches dust them underneath as the dust doesn't stick to the shell. |
