Can anyone advise me on caring for newts? Long story but I brought home some water weed yesterday from a small pond in our wood (for my tadpoles) and discovered two baby newts swimming around in it. They are tiny and still have their feathery gills. I think they're baby marbled newts because we found adults last year. I would love to try and raise these two - and then let them go. I've read that the tiny newts are prey to many other critters and I'd like to give these two a good chance of survival. Can anyone advise me on newt care? I'll be using their own pond water and weed, but what about food? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Jude
A quick update for those who kindly replied: I was told by people on the Caudata forum that I shouldn't keep my baby newts. It's actually illegal to take them from the wild in France. (I did bring them home by accident when collecting weed for my tadpoles and was amazed to find them). I also had a problem with what to feed them. Sadly for me, but happily for them I returned them to their newt nursery. My heart told me it was the right thing to do anyway. Now I'm worrying about my tadpoles instead! It's worse than having children!
