Any ideas why my aliens appear to keep on dying??? Most of them keep going very dark brown and crispy... (before you ask, no.. I did not bite into one to check)
Said on the dark side to just put them in a container with airholes and no food, cos they didn't need any... so I did... nuffin |

Well we've been feeding ours and so far so good. Not loads, just a bit of bran and a few carrot/potato peelings.
We'll let you know though, because they haven't started morphing yet. I think that is where the fun begins |

Could be the heat Jain - They metamorphose quicker when warm - if it's too cold they'll perish. Separate them from the mealworms that are wondering about as these will sometimes eat the aliens. Keep them near the radiator this should be enough... it's all we did the first time.
Don't let your culture get damp either or you'll end up with mites like we did or try the tights over the top like Paul suggested to keep any unwanted beasts out. |

Just been reading in my bug bible that Tenebrio molitor (meal worm) is one of more than 10000 species that are very different but, unfortunately, the larvae all look pretty much the same. Might present a problem with rearing them unless your supplier can tell you exactly what species your initial colony is.
Saying that, it also says that molitor (and some others) are usually found at all developmental stages in meal, flour and stored goods. If you research the conditions in which people used to keep meal, flour, etc then your colony should survive. Hopefully . |

Yaaaayyyy....I have two beatles!!! (Sad git ain't I...lol)
I decided it must get too blasted cold in our house at night for the aliens, so as I was already seperating them from mealies, put the aliens tub on the spare part of the heat mat that pokes out from under my baby whites and Horace, and lo and behold... two beetles leggies wiggling tonight...
Should I seperate the beetles from the other aliens do you know, or just leave them in with them but add some more oats and cornflakes and a bit of bread and potato?? |

Yay beetles! I would separate them from the aliens (and keep them warm to otherwise the eggs don't hatch) take all the alien skins out once they've emerged, the skins can cause bacteria to build up.
You can see we're being a lot more careful with this culture after the last one got ruined. Hopefully it will work! |

Eeuucchh... d'ya mean I gotta touch em?!?!?!!!!... not sure I can do that... maybe find a spoon and use that? Not really a girly girl at all, and I am fascinated by watching bugs and creatures, but cannot bring myself to touch 'em
If a hopper dare jump on me, I shudder and stomp on it... lol.... wonder if I will ever get over this fear?
Gil Grissom rocks! (an he's got a cute bum too) |

lol Kaz. The Wonder Woman hotpants do ride up a bit .
Just found out something quite useful. Just fed Biggles and Ginger's meal worms a leaf of Savoy cabbage and, like my lovely blowfly maggots, you can see when they are gut loaded. They've all got little dark green bellys . They seemed to like it too. I put I leaf in that covered the surface of the tub and 15 minutes later it was gone ! |
