I'm tempted by Fire-bellies. They are absolutely gorgeous. What are they like to keep?

If im honest we have found them really difficult to keep....

Its a long story but....

we started off with two green oriental FBT (gollum and smeagle) which we bought from a petshop who fed them on a diet of ONLY wax worms, we have tried so hard to get them off this diet but nothing has worked, they would rather starve than eat a cricket...

anyway one of the FBTs we bought from this shop (gollum) sadly died last month and the other one (smeagle) was gradually loosing weight due to not eating at all not even wax worms, he had developed a clapping/popping noise and had lost a lot of weight, so we decided to take him to the vets two weeks ago, who said that smeagle has basically the amphibian form of MBD due to only eating wax worms for so long and not getting enough or any calcium.

Good news though, he is now being syringe fed critical care and another food alternative (cant think of the name, OH does it), and he looks so much better, although the vet did say he may not recover properly and we have to watch him carefully this month.

However, lol... the other three we have a great, we bought them from a proper reptile shop and they are thriving and very happy little chaps

I just feel very sorry for smeagle as all of it could have been avoided if they shop had originally fed him on the proper diet.

sorry for the essay, lol. They are lovely pets to keep, very comical to watch.

Poor Gollum!

Glad you are sorting Smeagal out. I bet waxworms are cheaper than anything else. Nasty pasty pet shop owner.

What's your set up like? I thought they had to be kept mostly aquatic, but Lewy thinks a very large water bowl or cat litter tray should provide adequate swimming opportunities.

What do you think? It would be a lot easier to clean out if the bowl can be removed.

lol yeah they are nasty at that petshop, complete idiots.

we did have ours in a water set up with slate to sit on, fake plants stuck on the glass, a large plant that they could jump on and hide under and a habba hut for them to sit under and on top of.

but.....

we got bored with that set up lol. and it was difficult to change the water daily when it was like that.

so we now have them on eco earth, with a large plastic bowl in the corner of the tank with a few stones in so they can get in and out (this is so much easier to clean out) sphagnum moss in another corner so they can snuggle up in it, the same large plant, a few pieces of slate and their hut.

They do seem to prefer this set up, and we can keep it a lot nicer for them.
