Doing a water change earlier and putting a heavy glass vase in as a food dish, and decided as I had to move some heavy stones, best move toads into spare viv.... only found three...
Almost two hours later, and having cleared the lounge (which is no easy feat as I'm such a slob)!!... I was in my chair, having a rest and a ciggie, and who should I see hanging by a leg off the lid of the still open viv, but one escapee playing the clown
There is a very tiny little gap in lid where electrics run in to bulb and this is probably 1.5" deep.... little blessing must have clambered up the heater, pump and filter wires running up the back corner and made his way up there....
After cussing solid for a minute, eventually forgave him for giving me the fright of my life (not to mention a bloody good workout)
All four safely back in (slightly rearranged) tank... having taken that apart too, to ensure he had not got caught under one of the bigger stones.... |
If I had a brain, I'd be dangerous......

That's two stories of good escapee luck in 24 hours. Saddleninja did the exact same thing with his rainbow boa, cloud, yesterday.
Pets eh? They like to shake us up a bit |

P.S Jain
I nearly came home with a fire bellied toad the other day.
I went to a shop that had him on a woodland set up with only a really small water bowl. Felt really sorry for him, because I knew they are mostly aquatic. Unfortunately though we only had £7 between us so we couldn't get him. I'm tempted to go back this weekend though and give him a good life. |

They are funny little critters.... but you can't just get one, they have to live in a group ... lol My babies were only £7 each I think!!... how the heck much were they by you??
Apparently, some care sheets do say that they can be set up as land based with just a small water bowl, but I must admit, mine seem to love to swim, so I'm quite content to leave their set up as is.... (and I can't be rsed to change the water bowl every day... lol ~ cos the only way to get a waterbowl out of that small tank is to tip it on its side to do so cos of the strut thingys across the top or use a very small bowl, which I don't think is fair to them). |

OK... now decided to name this one Harry Houdini... as I was chatting to daughter on phone earlier and saw the little bl****r trotting merrily across the carpet. As soon as he knew I was on to him he sprinted under a corner cabinet and by the time I had got the blasted cabinet out of the way, he had wedged himself into a very small hole in the corner where skirting board meets wall.
I poke around with a flat spoonhandle, a tug on the leg and two baths later, he is now in a rub where I can keep an eye on him for the next few days....
Still scratching my head as to how he did it |

They are really good climbers, a bit of wire in the corner is sometimes all they need. I've seen photos of firebellies climbing up the corner of tanks even without a wire to aid them.... like little ninjas |

I get the climbing up the wires bit, or even using the waterfall and pump flow riser thingy to reach the roof of the viv, cos he's done that loads.... its the how he managed to get from one side of the viv to the other hung upside down on the ceiling to get to the hole in the lid that gets me!! (forgot to put sieve over hole as I normally do)...
Needless to say, sieve is getting cut up today and glued to lid!!
He appears quite ok despite his little adventure, so may well put him back in with others later today... bless the little b*%@er! |

I used to have a newt when I was young that lived in the tropical fish tank (would never keep it like that now I know more about them) that escaped all the time - we'd find in weeks later covered in fluff and dust - back in some water and he was okay. How he ever got out I don't know because there was a glass lip all around the tank. |

We had an escaped mealie the other day- that was scary
I've seen Star Trek, I know they go in your ears and control your brain. One of our mates was sleeping on the settee in a sleeping bag the night before. The mealie must have been on the hunt
Jain- that little fella was £12 in the shop, but another local one sells them for £10 and has a few. I fancy 3 fire-bellies if I get some. I'm going to call them Freida, Tash and Monkey. If we got the one I felt sorry for- that one would be monkey |

That seems a little expensive for FBT's Kaz...
Sad to say, when I got to putting Houdini back into tank last night, realised another one had gone AWOL ... looked under, around and in everthing in lounge, but could not find it . Dogs have also been in lounge with me all day also, so quite possibly provided one of them with a snack .
Ever the optomist, I have put a few saucers of water down, but nothing noticed this morning on checking, and not seen anything hopping around so far, but still watching for a miracle
I have reached the point where I now have a large piece of material wrapped around the lid where it joins the tank, as there is the tiniest gap imaginable.... never thought they may be able to squeeze through that only about 2mm at widest point
Lewy,... similar to your - looks like I may have to rethink my housing strategy with them, bless the little blighters... |

Oh no! Hope you find the little fella.
I think you might know if the dog has had him, because the toxins should make the dog ill I would think. Keep an eye out, they are good at hiding.
I've got my fingers crossed for you x |

Ok... he was back in the tank this morning.. obviously found a good hiding place, and did not take the tank apart quite as much as the first time... so just found a place to hide that I did not catch onto!!... really glad tho....
Poor little blighters must wonder what's wrong, with me continually checking the blasted tank!! Still leaving water bowls down in corners though...lol... just in case! |

I've got a Rainbow boa like that. The number of times I've panicked thinking she's gone and she's just hiding well under all the eco-earth |
