Hi, my tendency would be to keep my new horned frog on coconut mulch but the supplier swore they always keep theirs on moss, and have never had any problems. I'm aware of the problems of impaction, and was wondering if any other horned frog keepers have used moss without any difficulty? Thanks.
I had the same from the guy in my LFS when I got my first White's tree frog, with him pushing me to buy orchid bark and dry sphagnum. However I have seen my frogs get live moss stuck in their throats when feeding and can imagine how serious this would be if I was still using sphagnum...
I know that White's and horneds are very different, however I can't see why using something like Eco-Earth/coconut husk substrate would be a problem. If they swallow it it passes right through, and they can burrow in it with ease. The guy in the LFS just didn't like the mess, but that's easily fixed with a nice layer of dried leaf litter (I use oak leaves), it's not like it would be any barrier to a horned frog. lol
We don't use moss with our horned frog and the humidity is fine without it.
I personally don't think it's worth the risk, especially with a pacman who could quite easily swallow a loads into their big mouths if their aim is out.
